About The Course

This module aims to discuss the definition and types of diabetes, possible complications and both routine and emergency management. Insulin safety and the management of emergency situations related to diabetes will also be considered, as understanding what to do in these situations is important for patient safety.

  • Define 'diabetes mellitus'
  • Describe the different types of diabetes, and list associated common symptoms associated with each type
  • Recall the epidemiology of diabetes mellitus within the United Kingdom
  • Discuss possible complications associated with diabetes mellitus including: foot ulcers; kidney disease; diabetic neuropathy; and diabetic retinopathy
  • Appreciate the various ways in which diabetes may be managed
  • Know how to accurately and safely measure and record a resident's blood glucose
  • Explain the importance of managing the blood pressure and cholesterol levels of people with diabetes
  • Appreciate the importance of the multidisciplinary team in the care of those with diabetes, and recall the variety of health and social care professionals who may be involved in the care of someone with diabetes
  • Explain how diabetes may be monitored and appreciate the importance of screening to the care of people with diabetes
  • Describe the necessary steps to take to ensure insulin safety and explain the importance of adhering to these steps
  • Describe the ways in which independence in regard to diabetes management and care may be encouraged
  • Recall the emergency management of hypoglycaemia, and describe what you would do in such a situation
  • Recall the emergency management of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and describe what you would do in such a situation
