About The Course

This in-depth course aims to provide the learner with an understanding of the importance of mental health awareness within care settings. It covers the prevalence and incidence of common mental health conditions within the UK; the signs and symptoms associated with common mental health presentations including depression, anxiety, and psychosis; assessing and managing the risk of self-harm. The social model of disability and relevant legislation is also looked at and the stigmatisation of mental health conditions is discussed

  • Explain the importance of mental health awareness within healthcare settings
  • Recall the prevalence and incidence of common mental health conditions within the UK
  • Describe the signs and symptoms associated with common mental health presentations including: depression, anxiety, and psychosis
  • Be able to assess and manage the risk of self-harm and suicide in those you work with
  • Define 'stigma', and appreciate how mental health conditions are commonly stigmatised within contemporary UK healthcare and social settings
  • Explain why early identification of mental health conditions is important
  • Describe the social model of disability and explain its relevance to people with mental health conditions
  • Describe ways in which health and social care can be adapted to better care for people with mental health conditions
  • Recall the ways in which common mental health conditions may be managed including: the appropriate use of medication, the use of psychological therapies, and the importance of monitoring physical health
  • Appreciate the importance of monitoring your own mental health as a health and social care worker, and describe ways in which you can attend to your own wellbeing
  • Know where to find further support for your own, or others', mental health support needs
  • List relevant legislation to working with and supporting people with mental health conditions including Mental Health Act 1983, 2007, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Human Rights Act 1998, & UK Equality Act 2010
