About The Course

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a serious, genetic (inherited) condition affecting the blood and various organs in the body. It affects the red blood cells, causing them to change shape, known as 'sickling' or 'crisis', producing episodes of pain and other symptoms. In this module, the causes of SCD, symptoms and treatment are looked at, including possible complications such as pain, anaemia; acute chest syndrome and infection. There is also an opportunity to watch videos to hear from people living with SCD about their experiences.
