About The Course

This module considers the definition, causes, diagnosis and management of strokes and transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs).It is important that you know how to recognise and respond quickly to the signs that someone may be having a stroke, as well as appreciating the care that people who have suffered strokes may require long-term.

Learning Outcomes
  • Define the terms ‘stroke’ and ‘transient ischaemic attack (TIA)’
  • Recall the differences between haemorrhagic and ischaemic strokes
  • Understand the anatomy of the brain as is relevant to understanding strokes and TIAs, including understanding of the control centres of the brain and circle of willis
  • Describe what happens if someone suffers a stroke in various areas of the brain
  • List the risk factors for stroke
  • Describe the difference between primary and secondary prevention, and know how these types of prevention apply to reducing the risk of stroke
  • List the symptoms of strokes, and be able to recognise a stroke or TIA in practice
  • Appreciate the importance of rapidly responding to stroke symptoms
  • Describe how strokes are diagnosed
  • Describe how strokes are managed, including the importance of stroke rehabilitation and the role of stroke care units
  • Appreciate the complications that can develop following a stroke, and the role of end of life care in some individuals
