About The Course

This course provides an overview of the theory of the administration and storage of topical medications. It includes the theory of how to apply emollients and corticosteroids and also the instillation of eye and ear preparations. The safety aspects of topical medication application, side effects, documentation/record keeping and the importance of reading the labels on all medications is also emphasised.

Learning Outcomes

Explain where and how to store topical medication, including eye preparations and ear preparations and how to check if unsure.
Determine what the expiry date for topical medication once it is in use would be.
Describe standard precautions which should be taken when administering topical medication.
Describe how to administer topical medication in a sensitive and dignified way, and one which minimises pain, itching or discomfort.
Understand the importance of clear directions on pharmacy labels and what to do if the instructions are not clear.
Identify where topical medication administration is recorded and follow local policy with regards to record keeping.
Describe how to prevent the transmission of infection when administering topical medication.
Explain how to safely administer all types of emollient or corticosteroid topically.
Explain how to safely administer the common types of ear and eye drops and eye ointments according to best practice
